Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men after skin cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, about one in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. About six cases in ten are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older.
Prostate cancer is a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with it are treated successfully. There's no proven strategy for preventing prostate cancer, but a practicing healthy lifestyle is one of the best things you can do to reduce your risk. The Mayo Clinic offers the following tips.
Limit unhealthy fats in your diet. In some studies, men who ate the highest amount of fat each day had an increased risk of prostate cancer. Limit fatty foods by selecting leaner cuts of meat and reducing your intake of full-fat dairy products. Research shows that fats from animals were most likely to be associated with an increased risk of prostate cancer, so consume more healthy fats from plant-based sources such as olive oil, nuts, seeds, and avocados.
Increase the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat each day. Fruits and veggies are packed with vitamins and nutrients linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Add an extra serving of a fruit or vegetable to each meal, and enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables as snacks.
Add fish to your diet. Fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and herring contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are linked to a reduced risk of prostate cancer. If you don't like fish, add an omega-3 supplement to your daily regimen.
Maintain a healthy weight. Men with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher may have an increased risk of prostate cancer. Achieve or maintain a healthy weight by consuming a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and exercising regularly. Studies show that men who exercise have a reduced risk of prostate cancer. Aim for 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week.
